History: World famous is a Romanian spelling variant of the personal name Drakul, borne by Vlad Dracul (‘Vlad the Dragon’), the prince of Wallachia from 1436 to 1442, and later in the form Dracula by his son Vlad Dracula (‘Vlad the son of Dracul/Dragon’), known also as Vlad the Impaler, who served as the basis for the fictional Count Dracula (in part because of his bad reputation as a cruel man and in part because of the meaning of his name in the modern Romanian: ‘the Evil one’, from drac ‘devil’).
