The meaning of Doremus

French (northern France; also Dorémus) and Dutch (of French Huguenot origin): probably from d’Oresmieux or d’Oresmaux, habitational names denoting someone from Oresmieux in Pas-de-Calais or Oresmaux in Somme, respectively, apparently reinterpreted as Doremus, Dorémus under the influence of the Christian liturgic Latin phrase oremus ‘let us pray’ or its French derivative orémus ‘prayer’. Alternatively, at least in Nord, a patronymic, with fused French preposition d(e) ‘of’, from the originally Flemish or Dutch nickname Oremus 1. The surname Doremus is not found in the Netherlands anymore. Compare Doramus. History: Cornelis Doremus from Middleburg in the Netherlands settled, together with his family, in NJ a few years before 1690. His ancestors were French Huguenots who settled in the Netherlands fleeing the religious persecution in France. This surname is listed in the (US) National Huguenot Society’s register of qualified Huguenot ancestors.
