The meaning of Devilbiss
Americanized form (also De Vilbiss) of Swiss German Deubelbeiss, an Alemannic nickname from Middle High German dūvel ‘devil’ + beiz ‘biter’. Compare Divelbiss. History: The surname Devilbiss was brought to the US from Germany (and ultimately probably from Switzerland, via Alsace) by a group of Protestant siblings who arrived in PA in 1731 and later settled in MD. In the passenger list the surname appears in the spelling Debelbissen (and similar variants), while in the early MD church records it has been spelled Debelbiss, Deubelbiss, Dewelbiss, Teubelbiss, Teufelbiss, and so on.
