Variant, with fused French preposition de ‘from’, of the French topographic name Ramus 5 or of its mostly Swiss French cognate Ramuz. The surname Deramus is not found in France nor in Switzerland. In the US, where it is usually written in the form DeRamus, it is most common among African Americans. History: Joseph Funderburk Deramus from Switzerland married Anna Pfund (also spelled Phund) in Orangeburg, SC, in 1742.
