French: variant of Delavant (and, in North America, an altered form of this), itself probably a variant of Delavaud, a habitational name, with fused preposition de ‘from’, for someone from Lavaud, the name of several places in the westcentral part of France. This form of the surname has apparently died out in France. History: Cornelius Del Avant/Delavan of French descent married Deborah Green in Stamford, CT, in 1712.
