The meaning of Craker

1. English (of Norman origin): habitational name from any of the three places, in Calvados, Oise, and Nord, France, called Crèvecoeur (‘break heart’), from Old French creve(r) ‘to break or destroy, to die’ + ceur ‘heart’, a reference to the infertility and unproductiveness of the land. 2. English (of Norman origin): there are also occasional examples where the name in 1 above is derived from French crève-cæur ‘break heart, heart-breaker’ used as a nickname for a philanderer. The surname has probably been partly absorbed by Croker and Crocker. 3. Americanized form of German Kräker or Kraker and perhaps also of the same Dutch surname. History: Hamo de Creueker, from the Norman baronial family (see 1 above) which came from Calvados and held Leeds Castle in Kent from the 11th to 13th centuries, has left his name in Crockers (Sussex) and The Creakers in Great Barford (Bedfordshire), recorded as Crewkers in 1539, Crecors in the 17th century, and Crakers in 1766.
