Italian (southern, mainly Caserta): from a personal name based on classical Greek Kassandra, the name of a mythological prophet, daughter of the king of Troy, which is often associated with a person who predicts misfortune and goes unheard. In Tuscany, the term also became a nickname for a corpulent woman, under the influence of Italian cassa ‘trunk’, ‘crate’.
