Native American (Cherokee): from a personal name which originated in English (or was translated from Cherokee into English) as a nickname for a person with bushy hair. History: One of the first bearers of the surname Bushyhead was Jesse Bushyhead (1804–44), a Cherokee religious and political leader. He is believed to be a descendant (grandson) of the Scotsman John Stuart, a British royal superintendent of Indian affairs from 1761 to 1779 to whom the nickname Bushyhead was supposedly first applied and later passed as a personal name to his Cherokee son, a father of Jesse Bushyhead and his siblings.
