Polish and Slovenian; Slovak (also Bobík and Bôbik) and Czech (also Bobík): from a diminutive of Slavic bob ‘bean’ (Polish, Slovenian ‘broad bean’), hence a metonymic occupational name for a grower of beans or a nickname for someone tall and thin. Slovak bobík is also a nickname for a ‘small unpedigreed dog’. The Slovenian surname is actually a variant of Bobek.
