The meaning of Blickensderfer

Americanized form of South German Blickensdörfer, itself an altered form of Swiss German Blickensdorfer, a habitational name for someone from a hamlet called Blickensdorf in canton Zug. Compare Blickenstaff. History: Blickensdörfer is the name of a Swiss Mennonite family, originally spelled Blickensdorfer, a form still found in Switzerland, but in southern Germany altered to Blickensdörfer. The progenitor of (most of) the bearers of the name Blickensdörfer and its Americanized forms was Hans Jakob Blickensdörfer from Switzerland, who settled in the Palatinate during the religious persecution of the Mennonites in Switzerland and whose four sons (Christian, Johannes, Jost, and Ulrich) immigrated to the US in the middle of the 18th century. However, these sons did not continue in the Mennonite Church, hence the surname Blickensderfer and another altered form Blickenstaff are not found among the Mennonites in North America.
