Hispanic (Dominican Republic; Bisonó): altered form of French Bissoneau or Bissoneaux (or perhaps of some other like-sounding cognate), diminutives of Bisson 1, a topographic name meaning ‘bush, scrub’, which are no longer found in France. History: The Bisonó family descends from French landowners in Gonaïves in the French colony of Saint-Domingue (present-day Haiti), who in the beginning of the first decade of 1800s, during Haitian Revolution, had to flee amid a massacre against whites to the Spanish colony of Santo Domingo (present-day Dominican Republic), where they settled in San José de las Matas. The exact original form of their French surname is not known.
