The meaning of Bigness

1. Americanized form of French (or French Canadian) Bigonesse: apparently a derivative of Occitan bigon ‘forked hoe’. 2. In some cases also an Americanized form of Norwegian Bygnes: habitational name from the farmstead Byggnes, a compound of bygg ‘barley’ and nes ‘promontory, headland’. History: The surname Bigonesse reportedly originated in Beaucaire (Gard) in France, but it has not survived in France. Most of the American descendants of Jean Bigonesse-Beaucaire (born in 1728 in Beaucaire, France, died in 1773 in QC) bear the surname Bigness, while in Canada the surname remained in its original form.
