The meaning of Bethard

English: perhaps a variant of Welsh Beddard. History: Ancestry of bearers of this name has been traced to William Bedder (c.1656–1718) of Somerset County, MD. He was probably of English descent. Roger Bedward (1614), Roger Beddard (1619), and Thomas Bethart (1780) all appear in the parish registers of Albrighton in Shropshire. Bedder is probably the same name (it is found in Shropshire in 1778) but it is earliest recorded in Wiltshire (1598) where it might have had a different but uncertain origin.
