1. Dutch: mainly a habitational name from either of two villages called Beets, in North Holland and Friesland. 2. English: variant of Beet, with post-medieval excrescent -s, from the Middle English personal name Bete, a pet form of Betris (see Beatrice). In East Anglia, however, where the name is concentrated, it is of Dutch origin (see 1 above), as evidenced by the census of 1881. This surname is now rare in Britain. 3. Probably an altered form of German Beetz.
