French: variant of Barriault and, in North America, possibly an altered form of this. Alternatively, a variant of Barrillot or Barillot, diminutives of Barril and Baril ‘barrel’. History: Nicolas Barrieau from France, who married Martine Hébert at Port-Royal in Acadia (now Annapolis Royal in NS, Canada) in c.1682, reportedly came to Acadia aboard L’Oranger in 1671. It is not certain whether Barrieau was the original form of his surname. His descendants also bear the surnames Bar(r)iault, Bar(r)illeaux, Berrio, and similar.
