South German: habitational name for someone from a place called Anspach (see Anspach) or Ansbach (see Ansbach). This surname is virtually non-existing in Germany; in North America it may thus (also) be an altered form of the German variants Anspacher and Ansbacher. In the US, it is found mainly in PA. History: In 1777 two regiments of mercenaries from Anspach in Hesse were sent to fight for the British in the Revolutionary War. After the war was over many of them settled in North America, and it is possible that some became known by this surname.
