French (Puy-de-Dôme): from a derivative of the personal name Amat ‘beloved’. Compare Amidon. History: Roger Amadon (alias Amadowne, Amidon) was in MA in 1637; he died there in 1673. According to family tradition, he was a Huguenot who went to England, where he remained for some years before emigrating to America. He is listed in the register of Huguenot ancestors recognized by the Huguenot Society of America (as Roger Amadowne) and also in the similar register of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina (as Roger Amidon).
