English: probably an altered form of either Ellingsworth or Hollingsworth (also found in the US in the rare spelling Hollensworth). The surname Allensworth seems to have disappeared from British records. History: The most famous bearer of the name is Allen Allensworth (1842–1914), who was born into slavery but escaped and became a Union soldier. Later he was appointed chaplain in the US Army, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In 1908 he founded Allensworth, CA, a place dedicated to the ideal that African Americans should be able to own property, learn, thrive, and enjoy the ‘American dream’.
