Muslim (Saudi Arabia; also Al-Ghamdi): variant of Al-Ghamidi, a surname denoting descent from or association with the Arabic tribe of Ghāmid, a subtribe of Azd, dating back to pre-Islamic times, with roots in Yemen. The name of the tribe (from Arabic ghāmid ‘concealing’) is said to refer to an incident in which a potentate of this tribe concealed a delicate matter that had arisen between himself and a kinsman; whereupon one of the kings of the pre-Islamic Yemen bestowed the nickname.
