The meaning of Alberda
West Frisian: patronymic meaning ‘(belonging to) Albert and his kin’, and subsequently also a habitational name for someone from the castle of Alberda or an estate or farm called Alberdaheerd, in ‘t Zandt, Groningen. This is the name of nobility in the Groninger Ommelanden region, dating from the 15th century. In 1811, however, in the province of Friesland the cognate patronymic Alberts became the surname Alberda officially in several families.
