Haplogroup F-M89

What is Paternal Haplogroup F-M89?

Haplogroup F-M89, also known as Haplogroup F-M89 (Y Chromosome Consortium long-form label), is a genealogical group of lineages defined by unique genetic markers present on the Y-chromosome. Your paternal haplogroup, or that of your father if you do not have a Y-chromosome, paints a picture of your ancient origins and the migrations of your ancestors. Although your paternal haplogroup reflects just one of your many ancestral lineages, it carries information about that lineage over tens of thousands of years.

Among 23andMe research participants, haplogroup F-M89 is commonly found among populations in China and the Philippines.

It's important to note that your haplogroup doesn't define your current ethnic identity; rather, it provides an insight into your deep ancestry on the paternal side.

Haplogroup F-M89 is linked to the Lahu people

F is a haplogroup of great prehistoric significance, because it is the parent line for about 90% of the men in the world. Today, however, F-M89 lineages that do not belong to any of the other major branches are found in India and are very rare everywhere else. Men bearing the root F-M89 haplogroup can also be found in small pockets of Eurasia from Portugal, where they may have spread through colonial contact with India, to Malaysia and China in the east. The haplogroup is common among men of only one group, the Yellow Lahu, who are an ethnic minority living in the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan.
